Recently a client of mine asked me where all her tension in her body was coming from and what she could do to reduce it. Usually I am the one asking this question and some common responses that I hear are; ”I did too much on the weekend”, “I didn’t sleep right”, “I’m not sitting properly”, “I’ve always been this way”. These are all valid reasons, however, what is it that makes someone sit incorrectly, not sleep right or do too much? The common thread in all of these reasons is a lack of awareness. This is not a judgement, but merely an observation. Many of us are not truly aware of how we sit, how we work, play, eat and sleep. It is a sort of automatic movement which we do every day without really being conscious of what we are doing, “The automatic pilot”.

One of the reasons for not being aware is that we don’t take the time to listen to our bodily signals. Our bodies always tell the truth as to how we are feeling and sometimes the truth may not be something that we want to hear, feel or see. The truth may be those parts of ourselves that we find difficult to accept. The less friendly aspect of ourselves, the impatient self, the demanding self, the needy self, the weak self, the scared self, the angry self, the jealous self, the hurt self. Consciously or unconsciously we seek recognition and love from those around us. The unwanted self can be seen as a threat to those needs of love and recognition. By showing these parts of ourselves we may believe, due to past experience, that we will be rejected. So we end up pushing away the unwanted parts of ourselves and do things that we believe will ensure that we are accepted and loved, even if it goes against our true nature. We play a role which does not suit us, this can cause tension in our bodies as we literally hold ourselves in a position that does not reflect who we really are. The more we try to ignore, suppress and reject parts of our self, the more tension we create and the deeper those feelings will go, even making us sick. Many health problems are more to do with holding on to feelings of anger, fear, sadness, jealousy and anxiety than we realise. If unchecked, these emotions can wreak havoc with our well-being.

Embrace every aspect of yourself

By getting to know and embracing every aspect of yourself, your thoughts, feelings, and emotions, you will bring about change in your body and your life. I’m talking particularly about those parts of yourself that you are not proud of, that irritate and annoy you, the parts that you want to hide away or discard.

Excercise

Here is a little exercise to see what you think of yourself. Write a list of all the things you like about yourself and a list of the things you don’t like about yourself. Which did you find easier to do, the likes or the dislikes? Ultimately we need to learn to love and accept every aspect of ourselves. This is no easy task, but certainly a task worth doing, because you are worth it.

Recently I attended a weekend seminar with a man called Angaangaq, which literally means ‘The man who looks like his uncle’. Angaangaq is a shaman (spiritual leader or medicine man) from Greenland. He is spreading a very simple message. If we are to survive together as humans on this beautiful planet we must learn to melt the ice in our hearts. In other words learn to love ourselves and live from the heart. It sounds so simple and it is, yet he says that we make life so complex when life really is so simple. It begins with a smile.

During the seminar I discovered my own power that resides within me, though it is something that I’ve always been afraid of. I was afraid what others would think of me or say about me. I have been crushed so many times in my life by unkind words and unkind acts, to the point where I simply hid my true feelings, my true self in order to protect myself from being hurt again. I built a wall around my heart, such a wall, that I could no longer hear my heart speak to me. I became bitter and cynical, mirroring the hard world around me. As a result I did not cry for 14 years, not a tear. If I felt tears welling up inside of me I would simply force myself not to cry and hide any emotion. Then I friend of mine died and that changed everything, that was the turning point. However, I could not find my way back, back to my true self. After many years of searching and struggling with myself, I slowly began to learn about myself. By doing so I began the process of dismantling the wall around my heart.

Angaangaq showed once more that inner strength has nothing to do with big muscles, but being able to open your heart and sharing it with others. Where I was once hard on myself and those around me, I’m now more loving to myself and those around me. As I recognise the beauty in myself so am I able to recognise the beauty in others. For this I am truly grateful. I pray that we can all recognise the beauty within ourselves. As Angaangaq would say ‘Is it really true that you are beautiful?, Yes it is true’.

Spring has sprung and we are confronted with a world of colour and change. Mother nature is coming out of her winter slumber and the somber colours of the winter months are replaced with the vibrant colours of the rainbow. There is new energy in the air, giving us the incentive to start new activities.

The changing seasons also remind us that change is actually the only constant in life. Nothing stays the same, it may sometimes appear that way, as some changes are very slow, but inevitably all things change. The challenge for us as humans is not to resist change, not an easy thing to do when some changes may appear unpleasant, even frightening. The things we know and trust fall away and are may be replaced by things unknown, we find ourselves outside of our comfort zone. However, the more we resist change the more difficult the transition.
By opening ourselves up to change and learning to accept what comes our way, we come more in line with the flow of life. The period of transition then becomes easier to deal with.
So I invite you to embrace change. By embracing change you are embracing life.

We all experience fear at some time or another, big fears and small fears. There is nothing wrong with being afraid, it helps you to react in threatening situations. Your body produces adrenaline so that you can either fight or take flight. However fear can also be triggered based on false ideas, such as fear of failure, fear of confrontations, fear of rejection. When you give into these types of fears you block your creative energy. Your body still produces adrenaline, however by blocking the energy it can become stuck in your body causing tension.

Recently I was confronted by fear. Not a life threatening fear, but a fear that stopped me in my tracks. I had just experienced a difficult situation that didn’t go entirely as I had hoped, which in turn created some negative thoughts, thereby creating a terrible sinking feeling in my stomach. My immediate reaction was to try and push it away and ignore it, as it was simply put, a very unpleasant feeling (judgement). By doing so my fears increased in intensity as they further fueled my negative thoughts. The circle was complete in all it’s viciousness.

After some time I became aware of what I was doing. So instead I sat queitly, placing my hand on my stomach and simply felt what there was to feel. My fear came out of the shadows and into the light. My fear of rejection and failure came to visit me once more. Rather than be rejected and fail at what I was attempting to do, I was rather avoiding the situation and hence avoiding the pain of failure. At the same time I was also avoiding my chance of success. Here is a good example of how a negative conviction based on past experience can influence present experience and thus affirming the negative conviction. By simply feeling without judgement and accepting what was present I’m made aware of an old wound which created my negative conviction and hence giving me the opportunity to overcome it. By giving myself permission to be afraid I create space for myself and the courage to move forward and face my fears once more.

With a new year comes new energy and new chances to bring about positive changes in your life. I prefer to use the word intention. Having an intention in your life gives you direction, a destination in which to travel to. Many of us have good intentions for the new year, but often stumble at the starting line or early on and then just give up. Old habits and patterns are difficult to break, the chance is great that you will fall back in your old habit while creating a new habit. What is important is the fact that you are making the effort, that in itself is a huge step. It is much easier to sit and complain than actually get up and do something. If you fall down the only thing to do is simply get back up and try again. At some point it will get easier, your new habit will become a part of you, So hang in there and keep going.

Here are a few tips to help you achieve your intentions:

Create your intention as if it is already reality. E.g. I am a positive individual. By beginning a sentence with I want then the focus is placed on the wanting. You’ll create a feeling of wanting rather than being

Keep your intention realistic, if you have difficulty in sticking with your intention, perhaps start with an easier intention and then create a new intention once you achieve the first. For example, Today I’m going to eat less than yesterday. A journey begins with setting one foot in front of the other.

Celebrate the small victories, give yourself a pat on the back, congratulate yourself

Do you rest when you are feeling tired? Do you eat when you are feeling hungry? Do you go to the toilet as soon as you feel the urge?. These three feelings or signals from your body are some of the most basic necessities to help keep you in balance and healthy. The more you are able to listen to these signals the better you are able to maintain a healthy balance in your life.If you answered no to the questions above then “What is getting in the way?” Do you say to yourself I’ll just finish this, then I’ll rest, eat, or go to the toilet? Or perhaps you’ve been so busy that the time has flown by and suddenly you realise that you haven’t eaten or had a break. Does this sound familiar? If so what can you do to help maintain a healthy balance in your life.

Plan regular pauses in your day, use a timer or something to remind you. If you sit a lot, go for a walk. The exercise will get your juices flowing, not only your bodily juices, but also your creative juices.

Eat regularly, don’t skip meals. If you are getting hungry before a meal then eat some fruit. The sugars in fruit give a steady energy boost which last longer than the well-known “sugar rush” which gives a quicker yet shorter boost.

Try and go to the toilet as soon as you feel the urge. There is nothing more pleasurable than relieving yourself. Aaahhhh!!!!

She is in that phase where she wants to do everything herself and this means that things, such as going to bed for an afternoon nap, can take a painfully long time. This sometimes causes me slight irritation as her afternoon nap gives me a chance to get some stuff done around the house while she sleeps. If I try to rush her this causes only more delays and increases my irritation. Though I am aware that I am too focussed on results I still could not manage to bring about change, until today. Today I was simply able to observe my daughter go through her bedtime routine without concerning myself with the result. Bedtime has never gone so smoothly.

Recently I’ve been doing a little meditative excercise while I’m out and about. I make myself aware of my surroundings, what I see, the sounds I can hear, the warmth of the sun on my face, the smell of autumn in the air, the taste of the air and . I like to think that this little excercise has brought about the change that till now has eluded me.

I have had for the past few months constant tension in my left shoulder. Yes, I too experience pain and tension in my body. I have had tension in my shoulders before, but this felt different. I could feel every part of my shoulder full with tension. “So shoulder what are you trying to tell me?”. Each day I would try to be patient, observing and feeling my shoulder, simply allowing it to be there.

Of course, sometimes it would drive me crazy and I would give my shoulder a good massage, at least the parts I could reach. This gave me some relief, but sure enough those pain and tensions would come back. Just recently I had an insight, I was lying in bed, it was still dark outside and my shoulder was complaining. I suddenly realised that I have been giving into some old fears that we’re popping up again and not trusting enough in the process and my own qualities. These past few months I have been discovering the benefits of social media, this blog being one of them.

While I enjoy sharing my knowledge, I was also confronted with a feeling of fear. I have been worrying about what others would think of me or perhaps what I have been sharing is of no interest at all. Part of me was giving into my fear and it was making me unhappy and causing tension, not only physical tension, but also within my relationships. Worry, Fear of failure and rejection are some old friends of mine and I have to remind myself of the positive qualities that lie beneath, that being my inner strength, my creative ability and to simply trust in life’s processes. As soon as I made this discovery my shoulder pain subsided and my heart felt lighter. The fear is still present, but it does not rule me. Instead I see the fear as a reminder to follow my heart and trust that everything is ok as it is.

It is interesting to note that the meridian for the small intestine runs over the left shoulder. The small intestine is an important part of the digestive system. Digestion can also mean digesting or processing ideas, information and situations. How we deal with things. The small intestine reflects your ego in the form of how much you can or want to be yourself. Themes which can cause blockages in this meridian are: dissatisfaction, over analysing, dark thoughts, having to prove yourself, sadness en grief. Postive aspects can be: growth, spiritual growth, satisfaction, looking at the possibilities of a situation.
